Role Information
In Ashbrook, Karol will be told he is a student at Miskatonic Elementary and Middle School, and a Patrol Leader in a local Boy Scouts troop. His peers view him as courageous and friendly, and Sebastian Ortega often gives Karol and his troop advice and assistance. He can be a little too exuberant, though; while Janet Davis by no means dislikes Karol, he'll have a hard time evading her notice if he's going somewhere or doing something he shouldn't be. He's also been known to lend his sewing skills and creative flair to the school's drama club. Karol is still young, but his enthusiasm has everyone convinced he's got a bright future ahead of him. He has lived in Ashbrook for at least 5 years.

• Karol was born in Ashbrook. He is the middle child of three brothers, who are raised primarily by their dad while their mom travels for work
• Karol's family lives in an old house on the edge of the suburbs. Though extremely dated, it's well cared for and carefully maintained
• In addition to his Scout troop and drama club activities, Karol also attends martial arts lessons at a studio in the Pineview Mall
• Father Elijah Shears seems to think highly of Karol; he will always greet Karol warmly and offer him advice and blessings.
• Goody Spinner seems to be easily exasperated by Karol, so he'll need to be on his best behavior to get advice, assistance, and magic lessons from her.

Character Name: Karol Capel
Canon/Canon Point: Tales of Vesperia, end game
Character Age: 12; Karol's canon isn't kind of him. He's been a guild member for years already, and becomes a guild leader at 12. He fights monsters and faces peril and faces the apocalypse with only a minor amount of screaming. At one moment in the game, he turns from being the protected to being the one who overcomes his fear to rescue the rest of the party against a giganto monster.

Personality
Karol is a kid who's had to make his own way in the world his whole life, but he's also a kid who desperately wants love and support. These two parts of him are constantly at odds. He's from Dahngrest, the home of the Union of guilds, and he works in guilds starting at a very young age. When we meet him in the game, he's just been kicked out of the Hunting Blades, a guild for hunting monsters, and he immediately clings to the party, claiming that he's Totally and Completely fine and he just wants to come along! Since he's going in the same direction!

He moves from guild to guild, to the party, who form their own guild. He floated the idea of forming a guild in the way a kid does, not thinking he would be taken seriously, but Yuri does take him seriously and proposes that they form the guild, giving Karol that sense of belonging he's always craved. He can make his own way the way he's had to, but with the support of people he knows and trusts, and who trust him. Who show him respect and treat him like a person, but without forcing him to take on all the responsibilities of an adult. The party still shelters him, in a way, since he is only 12, but gives him that responsibility and listens to him.

This realizes the one big goal in his short life. Running a guild brings him a step closer to being like his idol, the Don, who's the leader of the Union. He idolizes the Don for his strength, both physical, mental, moral, and as a leader. He wants to be like the Don when he's older, wants to have influence and respect, he wants to have control over his life, and to help shape the Union in the way he thinks the Don would, keeping them safe and free from the Empire.

The Don's death hits him hard, taking away one of the few sources of stability in his life. He had gained a guild, a family, people who love and respect him, and all at once he feels like his world is torn out from under him. He finds himself unable to make a decision, unable to figure out how he can help, his fear and uncertainty and, really, his age, getting in his way in a way it hadn't since he joined with Yuri and the party. He can't see the way ahead of him, feels like a failure, an imposter, believing that he isn't worthy of the leadership he's been given. Like Yuri and Judy will take it away, will push him aside, because of one mistake. He fears that failure, fears not being good enough, fears his family, his own guild, rejecting him like so many other guilds have in the past.

Another tension is between fear and bravery. Karol is the definition of "do it scared". The world is vast and terrifying, and Karol faces it head on. When we first meet him, he screams because Yuri imitates an eggbear, after Karol swore he wasn't scared at all. Toward the end of the game, Karol is struck by a gigantic monster, forcing him away from the party, and the party is prone by the monster's power. Yuri yells for Karol to leave, and Karol hesitates, but in the end he fights the monster, one boy against one gigantic monster, and manages to save the party.
